WELCOME TO SOUNDS RIGHT RECORDING!
Sounds Right Recording had its beginnings back in California in 1966, when founder Drew Garrett recorded his first session at a Hollywood recording studio. Playing a rented bass guitar, The Philharmaniacs recorded two songs: "The Last Time" and that seldom-played masterpiece "Gloria".

After that it was on to Texas, performing in various rock, county, and bluegrass groups, playing covers and originals. The college years were spent majoring in music at Stephen F. Austin State University, playing first-chair bass in the school symphony, as well as playing in various off-campus groups, including the The Fredonia Rebellion (excellent bluegrass group), Redland (R & R covers) and then spending 6 years with the group Melrose.

1979 Four track cassette release. Included "Sweet Virginia" "Forty Songs (for Forty Dollars)" "Temper Temper" "He's A Breed". "Temper Temper" is the only non-original.
Melrose was a regionally successful country rock group that featured quite a few original songs. A highlight was winning first place in the Texas division of a 1981 national band contest sponsored by Seagrams Seven at Billy Bob's Texas, the world's largest nightclub (Ft. Worth, Texas - 127,000 SF!). The goup went on to take second place in the nationals held in Nashville, TN.

Part of the prize from winning second place in the national contest was recording two original songs for a 45 release: "Liven On Love" (sic) b/w "Rock-a-billy Betty"

Melrose released a self-produced 45 in 1984 containing two of their best originals: "Crimes Of Passion" b/w "One Of A Kind". Both sides received considerable airplay in east Texas.

After moving to Dallas, Texas, and the eventual demise of Melrose, the next group Drew joined was The Tribe. The Tribe was a mostly original rock band that was lucky enough to play all the hottest clubs in Dallas and Ft. Worth. This wasn't one of them:

It wasn't long before Drew made a return to bluegrass, forming the band Danger In The Air with his friend Andy Owens. The band began as a four piece with Drew on bass, Andy on mandolin, Robin Macy on guitar, and James McKinney on banjo. James was a national champion banjo player, and Robin would later leave the band to start an all-female bluegrass band called Dixie Chicks. You may have heard of them.
The band later added Stephan Dudash on 5-string viola, and the band went crazy, taking first-place in four bluegrass band contests:

- Tres Rios Bluegrass Festival - Glen Rose, TX
- Nacogdoches Bluegrass Festival - Nacogdoches, TX
- Tulsa Chili Cookoff and Bluegrass Festival - Tulsa, OK
- Kerrville Bluegrass Festival - Kerrville, TX

The band also finished fourth in the SPBGMA band contest in Nashville, TN. Bookings included the Kerrville Folk Festival and the Walnut Valley Festival. The group was also invited to participate in the Telluride, CO band contest, but those pesky Dixie Chicks were taking more and more of Robin's time.
